On 4 October 2003 we met at Hasbury Christian Fellowship on the southern side of Birmingham (a return visit following the meeting there in September 2001. We had ten bassists in attendance, with widely varying backgrounds and levels of experience, but we all had a good time.

Wulf started with a short devotion based on 1 Peter 5:1-4, showing that we all set an example to each other - good or bad - all the time, and thus all have responsibility for a certain measure of 'leadership', and a time of prayer.

Andy then took us through a session on improvisation which ended with us forming little trios that improvised within some fairly strict rules (each with a bass part, a rhythm part limited to one chord and a melody part improvised using only three or four notes based on the chord). This gave us all a chance to do a bit of playing with the rules preventing it becoming too 'scary' for anyone. We also enjoyed having Mark Oakes of Worship Released join us for this - he contributed a C6 chord to the proceedings.

After lunch (thanks to Chris and her gang for providing that!), we resumed with a session led by Tim Peel on different styles that can be used to approach the same song. This provided food for thought.

We finished with some more jamming around a 'standard' sequence found in many contemporary worship songs - A E F#m D - trying to use some of what had been discussed earlier in the day. If that doesn't sound like much, remember that there was also plenty of time for getting to know each other and trying out the wide range of equipment people had brought along.
