My Favourite Picture, December 2009

For my final monthly favourite from 2009 I present this image of an icy lane in Devon, taken on Christmas Eve. Truth be told, it is one image but, strictly speaking, two photographs as I blended together one that kept the detail of the sky with another that reveals the ice along the roadway. The result is moody but not just the silhouette it would have been without this blending technique (a digital graduated neutral density filter).

Still Working

I'm still working on pictures I took in December (just a handful from the Steampunk exhibition at the Museum of the History of Science left to go) so I can't pick my favourite picture for the month just yet.

However, at least I haven't been stuck with the “constipation” I've had before! Heavy snow and other events have kept my finger on the shutter button. That reminds me — I'd better go and get a shot of that large pothole in the road just outside the house and alert the council.

My Favourite Picture, November 2009

I was tempted to pick one of my fiery wallpaper series as my favourite picture for November but decided instead to choose this image. It shows the play of light on a pillar in St Clement's church and is being used to represent our entry for next year's Artweeks project. It was taken with my Lensbaby lens and has had just a little digital manipulation to make the colour and contrast more intense.

If I am not careful, picking my favourite from December will be tricky as, so far, I have not taken any photos at all!

Fiery Wallpaper 5

For my final fiery wallpaper, I gave the camera more of a shake as it moved. The effect is like tangled hair (although I'd love to know where you could get hair dyes to create this intensity of light!)

Number four in the series of fiery wallpapers used a smooth sweeping motion to create a subtly undulated effect.

For my third fiery wallpaper, I used vertical movement, catching both the flames and the sparks. The result is the glittering light you see above.

I was using auto white balance setting for my series of fiery wallpapers. For some reason, faced with a bonfire, this tends to bring out pinks and purples that aren't visible to the naked eye. That doesn't stop them being lush and beautiful though!
