Site Maps

I had an worthwhile afternoon down in town this afternoon, attending the University Computer Services termly webmasters event. This time round I was not just soaking up ideas and building my peer network over refreshments but also giving a presentation.

My theme was site maps as a useful web design tool. I started from real world examples of maps for purposes such as hiking in the countryside, strolled through the concept of how we gradually create internalised mental maps and then reached the topic of what this has to do with websites.

Specifically, I was demonstrating what I did using a bit of Python scripting and a style sheet called SlickMap CSS when I redesigned the departmental website back in the summer. I look forward to getting some follow-up questions over the next few days and also chewing on the new ideas that I did pick up (because I was listening intently as well as talking).
