Comments Please!
For over a year now, I have had the facility for comments on this blog provided by a homebrew mash-up of Flickr and jQuery (see related posts). This has succeeded in so far that I have not had to deal with any comment spam and that I have a robust mechanism for being alerted to new comments people leave me.
However, it is also true that my volume of comments is very low. Much of this will be down to the fact that the web-den is an example of a divergent blog; I write about whatever interests me rather than trying to establish myself in a niche and build a readership. I blog primarily for myself, friends and family. I suspect that some people also find the idea of going to a completely independent site (and having to sign up for an account there) offputting.
Therefore, I am considering trying a different approach. I recently became aware of a couple of third-party services that might accomplish what I need - Disqus and Intense Debate. I need to get a feel for how intrusive they are and how effective their anti-spam measures are (as well as whether it makes my daily blogging easier or harder) but, if you never quite get round to commenting under the present system, maybe you will soon be able to make your voice heard.
Or, of course, I may continue to bask in the deafening silence!
