Wine Review - Chianti Colli Aretini
The second of the wines I bought recently was an Italian chianti:
Chianti Colli Aretini (2005 Mannucci Droandi)

Chianti is a type of wine I have begun to become familiar with through its use in Jamie Oliver's pollo alla cacciatora (which I have blogged about before). Therefore, I bought this wine with the aim of accompanying another outing for that dish, which is robust and flavoursome.
The wine and I almost got off to a bad start when the cork broke during opening. However, I was able to remove the last bit with no damage so the taste was not affected.
It is a relatively thin wine, deep purple in colour, that I was initially inclined to describe as sour. However, rolling it around my mouth and savouring the taste, I think "brambly" would be a better description. There are overtones of blackberry and a freshness that reminded me of early summer and darkening fruit.
I would not consider this at the forefront of wines for drinking on its own but, alongside the rich and salty cacciatora it excelled, reminding me of the albariño I enjoyed last week.

For reference, here is the review given by Majestic:
An intense, ruby-coloured Chianti showing classic aromas of cherries, wild berries and a hint of vanilla, which follow through to the palate. Full bodied, with ripe, refined tannins and a fresh finish. The classic accompaniment to most Italian dishes, but works particularly well with duck pâté
