After several weeks prevarication (while, in my defence, I've been thinking about what pattern to use) my second pair of socks are now on the knitting needles. This time I'm using 2 lots of 100% wool yarn that I recently picked up on eBay. The main one is a walnut brown colour while the other is a blue/black mix. Both describe themselves as Double Knit, but the black is definitely a bit heavier. I think both are Shetland wool.
I had thought about doing toe-up socks this time but decided in the end to go for cuff-down ones again. This time I'm planning to do them mostly in stocking stitch, with just a ribbed cuff at the top for a snugger fit (or should that be more snug?). I've opted for 1x1 rib, which will go on for about 2" - so far I'm nearing the end of the cuff on the first sock. I've put in a horizontal stripe of the dark yarn, and intend to do stripes all the way down the leg of the sock. I'll probably do the heel and toe in the dark yarn too, and use the light one for the rest of the sock. I'm not yet sure whatmethod I'll use for the heel, although I've seen an interesting looking heel flap design using a knit one, slip one pattern alternating rows with purling. I'm knitting the cuff on 3mm needles (a set of 4 dpns inherited from my grandma) and will probably do the heel and toe on the same needles (on the basis that denser fabric should be harder-wearing), while the rest of the sock will be done on 3.5mm bamboo dpns (a set of 5). I'm planning to make the socks about 8" or 10" long from cuff to ankle, and probably do a bit of rudimentary shaping towards the top (probably decrease 4 stitches every few rounds from the 60 I started with to 48 or so for the bulk of the sock). Obviously, I'm making notes as I go along so that I can make the second sock like the first one.
Here's what the sock looks like so far:
Not very exciting yet, I must admit.
My other main knitting projects at the moment are a pair of mittens that I'm knitting simultaneously on 2 sets of 4mm dpns and my tea cosy, which I've been working on since the start of January. I finished the first half a week or so back and have now started the second side - I've done the first 5 rows (straight stocking stitch in white on 3.25mm needles) and just started the main pattern (blue and white stocking stitch squares on 4mm needles), which will go on for about 50 rows before decreasing. All that will then remain is to sew the two sides together and I'll then be able to keep my teapot warm.
