Peiriant Tatws

NB I'll put a brief summary in English at the end for the benefit of any poor soul reading this who doesn't understand Welsh.

Dwi heb sgwennu rhywbeth yn Gymraeg ar gyfer fy mlog ers talwm. Neithiwr glywes i hanes oedd yn werth chweil ei adrodd, sy'n dangos pwysigrwydd defnyddio acenion yn ofalus yn yr iaith Gymraeg. Dwi'm yn siwr os mae'n wir neu beidio, ond mae'n eitha doniol beth bynnag.

Glywes i am ddau blentyn ifanc roedd yn sgwennu llythyr at Siôn Corn yn ddiweddar. Gan bod ni yn yr unfed ganrif ar hugain, roedden nhw'n defnyddio'r cyfrifiadur i anfon e-bost ato fo. Roedden nhw'n gofyn am beiriant tatŵs (dwi ddim yn hollol siwr beth oedden nhw'n golygu felly, ond rhywbeth sy'n rhoi tatŵ ar eich croen siwr o fod). Yn sydyn, dechreuodd yr hogyn lleiaf grïo a rhedodd ei fam i mewn i weld beth oedd o'i le. Esboniodd y plentyn fod o'n poeni gan fod o'n methu cael hyd i'r llythyr 'ŵ' ar yr allweddell a dywedodd "dwi ddim isio i Siôn Corn dod â pheiriant tatws i ni!".

And now for the translation: it's a (possibly true) story I recently heard about 2 children who were sending an email to Father Christmas to ask for a tattoo machine (peiriant tatŵs - notice the accent on the 'w'). The younger lad got very upset when he couldn't figure out how to get the accented letter on his keyboard, as he didn't want to receive a potato machine (peiriant tatws)! Just goes to show that accents are not purely decorative in languages that use them.
